What is Mallala Motorsport Park?

Mallala is South Australia’s premier permanent race circuit, located about one hour north of Adelaide on Aerodrome Rd, Mallala SA 5502. It started life as a WWII Royal Australian Air Force training base and was converted into a racing circuit in 1961, originally to host the Australian Grand Prix. It’s been the heartbeat of SA motorsport ever since, with over six decades of racing history on the one site.

How long is the circuit, and what's the layout like?

The circuit runs 2.601 km with 9–10 technical turns. It’s actually a shortened version of the original 3.379 km Grand Prix layout, with part of the northern loop cut in 1964 after the old bitumen began to deteriorate.

What’s left is a tight, technical track with no real elevation changes. It’s all about braking hard, hitting apexes precisely, and getting on the power early. Locals call it a genuine driver’s track.

What are the main corners, and what makes them challenging?

The track has a few iconic sections. After the start-finish straight, you’re hitting Turn 1 quickly, so the braking is important right from the jump. The Southern Hairpin (Turn 4) is where you really feel the car’s power on exit; it rewards late-apex technique and an early, hard throttle.

The Northern Hairpin (Turn 5) is the track’s most serious braking event, followed by the Kink, the Sweeper, and the Esses, which require rhythm and a settled car before you square up for the main straight again.

What's a "late apex" and why does my coach keep talking about it?

A late apex means you brake deeper into the corner in a straight line, then turn sharply and hit the apex later than you’d expect. This sets you up to get back on the throttle earlier and harder, which is everything on a track made up of tight hairpins linked by straights.

Your coach will show you exactly where to brake and where to turn in. It’s the single biggest factor separating quick lap times from slow ones.

Has the track had any recent upgrades?

Yes! The Northern Hairpin received a full resurfacing in early 2021. Decades of racing and drifting had polished the old surface right down, so fresh high-grip bitumen has been laid. It’s made a big difference to braking confidence and consistency, especially for first-timers who are already nervous heading into the track’s tightest braking zone.

How much of the circuit can spectators actually see?

It’s surprisingly fan-friendly, from the grass banks and grandstands, spectators can see roughly 80% of the circuit. That makes it a great day out for whoever comes along to watch. Spectator entry is free on Fastrack event days, and there’s an on-site cafeteria for lunch and drinks.

What car will I be driving?

The core Fastrack fleet consists of custom-built Ford and Holden V8 racecars, all fitted with a 6.0-litre V8 engine. There’s also a Mustang option running the 5.0-litre Coyote V8 (inspired by the Gen3 Supercar platform) if you want to go Blue Oval all the way.

What are slick tyres and why do they matter?

Slicks are ex-Supercars Championship tyres with no tread pattern. The entire contact patch grips the road, meaning once they warm up, the cornering forces are in a completely different league to those of your road car.

That’s what makes the experience feel so raw: you’re sitting on the same rubber that’s been used at Bathurst and Phillip Island. They do need a few laps to come up to temperature, which is part of why the longer packages are so much more rewarding.

Is there an automatic option if I can't drive manual?

Absolutely. Automatic racecars are available, just request it at the time of booking so one gets allocated to you. If you’ve never driven manual before but want to give it a crack, coaches can walk you through, and it’s actually a great environment to learn because the coach is right there with you.

What licence do I need?

You need a valid car driver’s licence: P1, P2, or full. International licences are accepted as long as they’re within their expiry date.

How old do you have to be?

You need a valid licence to drive. For hot lap rides in the passenger seat, the minimum age is 14, with a minimum height of 135 cm, and a parent or guardian needs to sign the indemnity waiver.

When do I need to arrive?

Arrive exactly 15 minutes before your scheduled time. You’ll need to complete registration paperwork and an online indemnity form on arrival. Getting there a little early also means more time to watch other cars on track before you suit up, which is a great way to settle the nerves.

Will there be a coach in the car with me?

Yes, every driving package includes a Motorsport Australia-accredited coach in the passenger seat for every single lap. They communicate via a headset intercom and will call your braking markers, tell you when to turn in, and help you build pace through the session. No prior track experience is needed, as the experience is designed to take a regular road driver and teach them real racing technique from scratch.

What do I wear?

Wear whatever’s comfortable. You’ll be kitted out in a full fire-proof race suit over the top, so long sleeves and pants aren’t required underneath. The one non-negotiable is enclosed, flat-soled shoes (runners are perfect). No boots, no heels, no thongs. Bring sunscreen if it’s a warm day.

What if the weather looks bad in the morning?

Call the Weather Watch line on 0412 018 035 after 7:00 AM on the day. Light rain is generally fine, and events go ahead; standing water or poor visibility triggers a postponement. If the operator postpones the event, you can rebook for a future date with no fees charged.
